For nearly 100 years, Betty White inspired the people who surrounded her with optimism, smiles and her iconic good nature.  Everyone knew and loved Betty White and related to her wholesome “fun lady” characters played on TV.  The innkeepers at Distinctive Inns of New England (DINE) shared in the worldwide sadness upon hearing of her death, but we are also inspired by so many of her secrets, which relate to not only living life to it’s fullest but enjoying travel too.

In an article entitled “Secrets to a Long Joyful Life From Betty White and Other Centenarians” found in Katie Couric’s daily newsletter, KCM, insider stories about Betty White made it clear that she knew how to find joy in travel and in life. While she generally played the cleanest of characters, she didn’t always use the tidiest language.  According to the article, Betty’s The Proposal co-star, Mary Steenburgen, said Betty loved to “throw her little F-bombs around and did it with this beautifully dimpled smile.”

In addition, the same article quoted Sandra Bullock telling People Magazine that she hoped White would celebrate her centennial “the same way she has celebrated every day of her life with humor, kindness and a vodka on ice, toasting to the fact that she’s a badass who has left us all in the dust.”

Also according to Katie Couric’s article, “Ted Danson, who worked with Betty on her ocean conservation efforts, looked to her as an example of “how to live.” He said, “It’s not like she’s just a bubbly, joyful person,” he said before she passed. “She wakes up every day and chooses to be that way. I think she leads a very purposeful life.”

What can we learn about the best way to travel from Betty White’s secrets to success? Three important lessons.

Once in a while, throw caution to the wind and take the trip

Betty White wasn’t afraid to throw “F-bombs” out there every once in a while and was well known for her colorful language.  Every now and then, consider experiences outside the box.  Let your travel planning include an unexpected or even eyebrow raising experience.  Betty would do it. You’ll find plenty of them at DINE’s ten member inns.

Go ahead, enjoy the vodka and hot dogs

Vodka drinkBetty White avoided eating greens most of her life but loved vodka and hot dogs.  They say her preferences for vodka and hot dogs were in that order. At this time of year, we all tend to put an emphasis on resolutions to live a better life by eating better and drinking less.  Be Betty White! Be a badass and enjoy the vodka, eat the hot dogs, indulge in wonderful breakfasts, afternoon tea and fine dining at DINE inns or wherever you plan to vacation this year. Betty White would tell you that life is too short to skip the vodka and hot dogs.

Smile and live life to its fullest

We rarely see a photo of Betty White when she’s not smiling.  Joy filled her life and therefore those who surrounded her.  It was humor and smiles that made Betty White so likeable and fun to be around.  Smile and the whole world smiles with you.  Living life to its fullest also means seeing new places, exploring new experiences and going for it, the way Betty did.  Take the romantic getaway in 2022.  Explore DINE country and believe us, your days will be filled with smiles like Betty’s.

May Betty White rest in peace yet continue to entertain and teach us about how to live.  Just like her life of nearly 100 years, her secrets can help guide us all to live life to the fullest just like Betty did.

May your year will include plenty of reminders of Betty White’s secrets along with a trip to DINE country. When you come, don’t forget to book directly with the inn.
